From EESI: "EESI has worked with many diverse transportation interests to organize a letter in support of S.3380, a bill sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY). A Senate hearing featuring transit and this bill was held September 9. Saving Energy Through Public Transportation Act (S.3380) is the companion bill of House legislation (H.R. 6052) which passed this summer.
"The bill would provide $1.7 billion to expand and improve transit service over the next two years. Funds also could be used to keep transit fares affordable at a time when transit systems across the country are reporting double-digit increases in ridership. Elements of the bill may be included in energy legislation being considered before Congress adjourns."
If I may add, public transportation improvements will be part of any serious effort to reduce our greenhouse gases. We can not replace the current fleet of cars in the next ten years, but we can and should add train service of various types (commuter and longer haul railroads); we can also provide incentives for freight to move by rail rather than by truck (the cost of gasoline is a partial incentive, but not yet sufficient to move more of the freight traffic to rail).
The letter was used by various organizations. You can draft your own, or use the attached PDF without the organizational appendix.
