Well, Steven, if the analogy of societal behavior is that of an addict to material comfort, then my question is this: will we be smart enough to snap out of it by a combination of collective will power plus good advice and support from the non-addicted, or will we be so dumb that the planet needs to hit bottom in every way in order for human society to restructure its way of thinking?

If the human species is "coming of age" in our time, then individuals are going to have to fast-track our advancement from puberty to a more mature developmental stage. During the past 8 long, dark years of greed-mongering, denial and death-dealing, the juvenile behavior of so many leading political poseurs, opinion makers and talking heads who adamantly promoted the soon to become patently unsustainable, seemingly endless growth of the global economy by expounding the selfish thinking, contrived logic, faulty reasoning and ideological idiocy of their wealthy and powerful benefactors has got to be replaced by new ways of thinking and acting....... and different leadership such as is exemplified in our time by President Barack Obama.
Given what many people worldwide are recognizing now as human-induced global challenges that are looming ominously before the human family, it appears experts with understanding and knowledge of such formidable and pressing circumstances as could soon be confronted by the human community have what feels to me like a "duty to warn." Those possessed of clear vision, coherence of mind, a capacity for intellectual honesty and moral courage are called upon to speak out loudly, clearly and often so as to make yourselves heard as one voice everywhere on Earth.
If time is short and life as we know it of the essence, as it appears, perhaps necessary change is in the offing that leads the children away from unsustainable lifestyles resulting in human endangerment, biodiversity extirpation, environmental degradation and Earth's wanton dissipation to sustainable ways of living in the planetary home God blesses to inhabit........ and not ravage, I suppose.
