Commissioned by the Taiwanese government, the Beijing architects MAD has come up with the design of the "Taichung Convention Center" that seamlessly amalgamate the topology of the landscape and the architecture. Comprising a series of mountain-like buildings with pleated exterior surfaces [using high-tech photovoltaic panels as part of the walls, to power ventilation - editor], the structure not only presents a unique landscape but also allows natural ventilation, highlighting the East's philosophy of a harmonized cycle between human and nature. The structure presents a high-tech, eco-friendly pleated skin system, giving way to an endless dialogue between architecture and landscape. Featuring open courtyards to connect the individual mountains (buildings), the sustainable development not only touts modern technology, but also emphasizes traditional philosophy and aesthetics, while reducing the carbon foot prints of the residents as well as visitors.
