Financial Podcast   This American Life

I want to provide a good window into the current financial crisis and the bailout (now dubbed a "rescue" plan) that was passed on Friday, October 3rd.

Above is an audio from This American Life of the most recent broadcast, with Ira Glass interviewing a broad array of experts and providing "everyman" questions and analysis. This audio was made October 3rd, after the US House approval of the bailout.

These folks to whom I refer above, in This American Life, have been having a series of down-to-earth, honest, and thought-provoking discussions of what the economic problems are, and what the proposed solutions mean.

This financial crisis does not seem directly to affect our environment - however, as I and others (many others) have pointed out, the feverish, debt-based economy we live in is related to the fever that is causing us to consume the planetary resources.

If you would like a single word that ties together the economy and the global natural resource crisis, it is the focus on "growth".  When that understanding enters one's mind, then the financial markets are no longer an abstract or financial issue, but suddenly become connected to the way we live as a society and our relationship to the planet.

I highly recommend the Financial Podcast, above, a fascinating one-hour series of short interviews and discussion.  Enjoy!
