The 21st century finds the world facing what some have called a perfect storm of oncoming challenges. Without most of us realizing it, that storm is already underway, and is touching us already.
What is that perfect storm? The primary aspects are:
- Increased isolation and isolationism is causing individuals and nations to concentrate only on what appears good for them, for the moment. This often leads to condemning those who appear weaker, or different, and on a national level leads to trade wars and a hostile environment potentially leading to actual war.
- Global warming trends, marked by changing weather patterns, rising ocean levels, melting ice, and global average temperature increases. The news coverage has been increasing, but many feel governmental and societal action has been too little, and too slow.
- Depletion of natural resources, such as ocean fish stocks and other food sources, topsoil, and fresh water; this can also include the declining diversity of species due to extinctions, although some would point out that species can not simply be seen as a resource, but have intrinsic value of their own.
Some of the results of these already-occurring situations include:
- Inflaming of regional and global conflict, much of it traceable back to poverty and the unequal availability of vitally needed local resources including water, food, and healthcare. From another viewpoint, it is fear over loosing those life-supporting resources that leads to conflict, not the actual loss of the resources, so greater education and ultimately wisdom can also help reduce conflict.
- Drought and flooding, hunger and starvation, and risk of global pandemic disease initiated in stressed areas
Although the regular news covers conflicts in each country and globally, there is no unifying vision of what is causing the increase of instability, nor of what to do about it. Similarly with climate change, although climate change does receive mention in the media, the level of detail is often lacking, and more in-depth information is needed for the general public.
The lack of information about the changes in society and the environment is quite dangerous in a world that needs to deal with these challenges starting right now, and needs the vast majority of the citizenry to be informed and to support actions that are unprecedented in the scope and depth of their impact on daily life.
