I'm a native of New Mexico and I enjoy volunteering and achieving the satisfaction of "giving back".  

Currently, I'm a volunteer for The Mountain Fund, an organization that's on a mission to help end poverty.  Their mission is "to organize grassroots nonprofits and NGO's from a diversity of disciplines and support and coordinate these organizations' efforts to eliminate poverty, its causes and symptoms, in mountainous communities."  

I chose this organization because it is truly "moving mountains".  With an extremely low overhead, this organization maximizes it's contributions in order to assist those in need.  To me, that's what it's all about.

The Mountain Fund has about 30 projects, and one of their newer projects is a great new "reuse" program for outdoor gear, called Gear4Good.  

Gear4Good began with the inspiration of Osprey Packs and the "Pass on the Passion" program which started in early 2007.  Now you can donate your nicely used outdoor gear, such as backpacks, jackets, boots, etc., and we'll put it to reuse with someone in need of such equipment - instead of losing it to a landfill.

In the U.S., there are dozens of at-risk youth outdoor programs who can use packs, sleeping bags, boots, outerwear, hats and gloves. Porter programs in Nepal, Peru and Tanzania always need good sturdy gear. Search and rescue teams in developing countries need the same.  Please visit the Gear4Good website to see our current list of needs, along with contact information.
