The vast region of deserts, grasslands and sparse woodlands that stretches across the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia is by far the most crisis-ridden part of the planet.
With the exception of a few highly affluent states in the Persian Gulf, these dryland countries face severe and intensifying challenges, including frequent and deadly droughts, encroaching deserts, burgeoning populations and extreme poverty. The region scores at the very bottom of the United Nations's Index of Human Development, which ranks countries according to their incomes, life expectancy and educational attainments.

Population control, which is based on knowledge and wisdom, is a key first or early step to improving the conditions in Africa, central Asia, and ultimately all the areas where population will take over water and food supply i.e. the entire planet. Excessive populations for a given local or the global habitat is called "overshoot", and typically leads to a crash in the subject population through starvation and/or disease. Perhaps we humans have entered the "payback" phase of overshoot.
We, who have the science to see the big picture, should be talking with and helping those people who are without time or resources to look into, let alone act on, the big picture themselves.
