Canal buildingsThe movie of the City

The story so far:

Reporter Max Wahlter has been visiting the sustainable city of Porena (see earlier journeys).  Before we give you the next chapter we would like to share his movie with you.

The film acts as an affirmation, helping you gather the resolve to make the  the sustainable city a reality.

Play the movie several times, let it work in you, see how it makes you feel.  Leave a comment here!

Or read the book, available from the author's website.

For readers who have picked up the importance of water transport and the peripheral canal, you'll love the KUNSTERCAST with James Kunstler talking about water transport. http://globalpublicmedia.com/kunstlercast_water_transit

Hi Larry!

Thanks for the praise!

I like to see the newsletters and books more as ”sketches” rather like Leonardo daVinci might have done.

The idea is to get people thinking.... So it’s cool i GOTTCHA!

Of course I have thought too... so I’ll give you my angle, but they are just thoughts as I have no access to industry ( well, very little)

If I were in China right now, I’d be encouraging them to look into manufacturing the ”bits” needed to make underground transport systems.

Standardised sections, control systems, rails, propulsion, would mean they could offer retrofit services to cities all over the world, after cutting their teeth on their own.
Actually, ANY country could make that facility and get a head start.

BTW, the canals of England were dug by hand and with coal-powered diggers ( I saw some in a museum) and so was the first ever underground system, London.
I call it green gym......
Hey we’d get fit....
We could chat whilst we dug...
At last we could do a guy thing!!!!!!
And feel good about drinking beer afterwards

Radiality is ONE response to the need to make walkable cities. I hope people will think of others.
In the book, the city is retrofitted around radial lines. It was fairly flat to begin with.

New cities in China could uses radiality, although I would love to think a retrofit is possible. Some European cities, the old ones, are designed this way.
Milan used to have covered walkways.

Steve,

The video is interesting; are there many opportunities to design radiality from scratch? (I'm more of a Gaviotas fan.)
I suppose that your ideas are best implemented in times of energy sufficiency since they seem to require some tunneling and aquatic terraforming.

Porena was started as an experiment because our footprint exceeds the carrying capacity of the Earth. Read all about the latest developments as we hit the 130% mark. http://www.worldwildlife.org/who/media/press/2008/WWFPresitem10439.html

For those of you skeptical about the feasibility of underground pipeline transport, there is a list of the current research available at http://www.capsu.org/library/large_diameter.html.
