Google has unveiled an aggressive $4 trillion energy plan to significantly wean the U.S. off fossil fuels by 2030.

Through it philanthropic arm, the company has poured millions into a pursuit of renewable energy technologies. Its plan, "Clean Energy 2030," includes green building codes, a push toward electric cars and energy efficiency, a carbon tax, renewable energy tax credits and reducing vehicle-related fossil fuel use nearly 40 percent over the next 22 years.

"Right now we have a real opportunity to transform our economy from one running on fossil fuels to one largely based on clean energy," Jeffrey Greenblatt, Google's climate and energy technology manager, wrote on the company's blog. "Technologies and know-how to accomplish this are either available today or are under development.  We can build whole new industries and create millions of new jobs."

Meanwhile, Institute for 21st Century Energy, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, also unveiled its own energy blueprint last week. "Blueprint for Securing America's Energy Future" offers 75 policy recommendations based on an all-of-the-above strategy that includes more nuclear and clean coal power generation, increased domestic oil production, a Clean Energy Bank to underwrite new technology development and energy efficiency.

"With more than 75 policy recommendations, the blueprint is a thorough and compelling framework for the next president and Congress to adopt as a balanced and comprehensive energy strategy," General James Jones, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber Institute for 21st Century Energy, wrote last week on the organization's blog. "The blueprint also serves as a bridge to an energy transition plan that the Institute will introduce to the next president and Congress in the coming months as a foundation for a comprehensive, new energy strategy for our nation."

What you wrote may be grim, yet I still had to chuckle at your "We do stuff. We find reasons for what we do. In that order. The prefrontal cortex is like a frantic PR flack, running around trying to find reasons for the stupid stuff that our lizard brains make us do."

Didjya ever watch Star Trek? The Borg ship is looming on the other side of the planet, and Picard and Ryker and Troi are all wondering what to do because they can't run, they can't beat them, and they are about to be detected by the scanners. They screwed up and can't think of anything to do but cower and give orders for everyone to prepare for battle.
Then Wesley Crusher (the kid) speaks up and says, "Um, Captain? What if we shut everything off so they can't detect our energy signature?"
"We can't shut off our detectors and our toasters and our hospital deck and our life support! That would be suicidal, you stupid kid."
Then Wesley's mom tells the captain to screw himself (she's his secret squeeze).
Jordy says, "Captain, I think Wesley's got something."
So then, Ryker says, "SHUT IT DOWN!!! SHUT IT ALL DOWN!!"
Their mistake was getting trapped by the Borg.
Our mistake was creating the consumption culture after WWII. Instead of turning off the switches at the weapons factories, we converted them to refrigerators and TVs and the banks lowered interest rates to 'grow the economy'. We are PAST the tipping points which were predicted. Just because we aren't dead yet doesn't mean there is still hope. There is just the choice of economic suicide with the hope that a few will survive, or everyone becoming hideously flaming wraiths running from their exploding cars. (well, that was just for effect...it would be our children, and they will be starving to death.)
We have released billions of years of stored sunlight into our atmosphere and oceans in a matter of 100 years.
Sorry to be so grim, but until we face the realities and fact that we didn't listen to our own scientists 20 or even 10 years ago, we are just creating another illusion to pretend we can 'fix' the climate. Nature will fix the climate, one way or another. Probably like it did with Venus.

It can feel pretty grim at times... the best remaining hope for dramatic change in time to avoid tipping points seems to be some crisis, like Katrina, only bigger, and caused clearly by global warming and peak oil.

Here's my energy plan:
Cook my pastured chickens over the flames as Rome burns.

There is no PLAN! Everyone just wants to believe that SOMEbody will do SOMEthing so that they don't have to worry about losing the unnecessary comforts they have become addicted to and which have destroyed our paradise planet.
We get the future we deserve, and the continents are getting smaller by the day.

This all sounds good to me. I hope they will be able to get the cooperation of our government. Something definitely needs to be done and done now.
