Optimism: 3 Categories: Economic/Financial, Philosophical & Quality of Life

Pride, and Thrift, and Expediency, who jeered and chirped and were so well pleased with themselves, and made merry with the dream, as they termed it, of Philosophy and Love, — behold they are all flat, and here is the Soul erect and unconquered still.

Wow! What a writer and thinker Emerson was. This was part of extensive writing and speaking he did after a major economic collapse that occurred in 1837.

He was talking even back then of using difficult times as an opportunity to re-build the priorities of society. You, the reader, should read the full article and more extensive quotes in the source item for this quote post.

Not much has changed, and here we are again in 2009. But perhaps the underlying problems have grown further, as the great majority of humanity continues to avoid the deep thought needed to break the cycle of dreaming, materialistic excess, and collapse.
