It would have to be an emotional message, an exclamation, similar to sarcasm, e.g. "You could NEVER do THAT, could you?", so that both emotionally and intellectually a patient/client would have the opposite impression from that statement.
Could it be compared to a surgeon opening a person with a knife? If the one operating does not know enough, or is careless, a disaster can result.

By the way, I’ve heard that some psychologists use tricky techniques to encourage behaviors like stating that certain functional behaviors are impossible, in order to encourage the patients to take on the dares. I, personally, think that even if it might work for some, for some, it will have the reverse effect, and it’s totally improper.

Yes, agreed. Psychotherapy is important, but totally ignoring or even downplaying the importance of surrounding factors that contribute to dysfunction in an individual, can be a large error that makes the suffering worse for that individual.

I’m not saying that the psychology and psychiatry of a particular society are totally without merit, as I’m sure neither was the renowned psychologist, Eric Fromm. I’m saying that one should look at the “expert” opinions and conclusions in the context of the background of the psychiatrists and psychologists, individually and as a group – their society, religion, culture, personality, intelligence,… with a healthy dose of skepticism.

We've become "insane" living in the "civilized" world, and we do well to allow that reality to wash over us, and not take it too seriously. The more "outsider" we are, the likely we are to be closer to "sane" which marks us, surely, as deviants.
