In 2004, the average atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration reached 377.4 parts per million by volume. The average CO2 concentration has increased more than 19 percent since measurements began at Mauna Lao Observatory in Hawaii in 1959 - and has gone up 35 percent since the dawn of the industrial age. Average annual rates of increase have more than doubled since 1960.
