In 2 decades of wars for oil and resources, the fossil fuel industry has gotten a lot of bad press. But climate deniers are people too, and they need to feel good about themselves and what they do. So they've worked hard overcome feelings of guilt.
It's a defense I call, "Therapeutic denial". See the video
